Hello, my name is Lauren Lee. I am a P2 student at UHCOP. In my free time I enjoy painting and telling jokes to my friends. I decided to join SSHP because of my interest in clinical and hospital pharmacy. Through SSHP’s residency workshops and events, I have been able to develop professionally. As the P1 Medication Safety Junior Chair, I was able to develop personally too. Through this experience I learned about how to communicate to the community in ways that everyone would understand. Many patients often have trouble understanding what they’re being prescribed and how to administer, store, and dispose of their medications. As future pharmacists we will be responsible for educating the patients on all the ways to take their medications. I am happy to be back as the Medication Safety Senior Chair and am ready to present on these important topics. I hope to see everyone soon!
STUDENT SOCIETY OF HEALTH-SYSTEM PHARMACISTS We are your residency connection!
Who are we?
The University of Houston Student Society of Health-System Pharmacists (SSHP) is the student chapter of the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP), the Texas Society of Health-System Pharmacists (TSHP), & the Gulf Coast Society of Health-System Pharmacists (GCSHP). Our local chapter is nationally recognized by ASHP because of the wonderful events that we host, but more importantly, our many active members who participate in these events. Our organization represents areas of pharmacy outside of the traditional retail pharmacy environment. These areas include, but are not limited to: clinical pharmacy, inpatient & outpatient clinics, hospital pharmacy administration, home infusion, academia, managed care, long-term care facilities, health maintenance organizations, and more! We are your residency connection! Our organizational activities include: networking events with residents & residency program directors, job shadowing, clinician mentorship programs, monthly general meetings, a local clinical skills competition, professional development seminars, residency bootcamps for P3 students, and much more. We are also involved with community service through health fairs, national health observances, and our public outreach initiatives: medication safety and antibiotic awareness.
Why should you join?
Our organization has much to offer, from amazing networking opportunities & insightful speakers to numerous leadership & service events. Because our college is located in the the world-renowned Texas Medical Center, our members have the advantage of hearing from clinicians who are ranked at the top of their fields. At each meeting, we bring in a new pharmacy practitioner with a different clinical specialty. Members are able to hear what it is like to do a residency at different institutions, as well as the ins & outs of practicing in each particular specialty. Specialties presented can include, but of course are not limited to: infectious diseases, internal medicine, psychiatry, solid organ transplant, pediatrics, cardiology, critical care, and many more. Our meetings offer a great opportunity to learn about different areas of pharmacy that may not be taught in an academic setting. SSHP also hosts many annual networking events, such as the University of Houston Residency Showcase, Residency Workshop, & Residency Mentoring Social. Our organization believes it is of the utmost importance for our members to spend time with residents & program directors in order to build a professional network. These connections are not only crucial to obtaining a residency after graduation, but also for career opportunities beyond that. SSHP also offers numerous leadership opportunities to all class years. We have over 20 officer positions -- four of which are offered to first year students. There are also officer positions available with our state and national chapter affiliates to promote leadership outside of our college.
You don't want to miss out on all of the great things that SSHP has to offer. Become a member today!
